Maine’s paid family and medical leave (PFML) program will launch next year. PFML is funded by employer and employee payroll contributions and is administered by the Maine Department of Labor (MDOL). It applies to all employers and employees. The MDOL will handle claims, approve or deny leave, and pay benefits to claimants.
Payroll contributions begin January 1, 2025, and employees can start taking PFML on May 1, 2026. Employees will be entitled to up to 12 weeks of leave per year, and those who have been employed for 120 days or more are entitled to job protection.
Employer Notice
Employers must post a notice at each worksite in a conspicuous location in English and any other primary language spoken by three or more employees in that workplace. They will also need to provide a written notice to each new employee within 30 days of their hire date.
The MDOL has already provided a model notice for employers to post.
Employers have specific requirements for the new hire notice.
